“There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love.” 1 John 4:18 How to Survive FearI’ve stared my greatest fears in the face and survived.

I may whimper like a dog who’s been kicked while she’s down a few times, but I’m alive and plan to stay that way. And it’s occurred to me more than once that the benefit of living through a personalized nightmare, is that you no longer have to be afraid. Even if it’s even more painful than you’d imagined (and it is), you’re still here. You survived.

You’re a survivor.

God’s unsurpassing love is the reason.

His love is powerful enough to battle the fear, because in His love there is no fear. His unconditional, perfect love casts out fear. It fills us to overflowing and we’re like Scott Pilgrim and the Power of Love. Only better because it’s real and perfect and nobody turns into coins. (And I’m doing the Kim finger to the head thing because I just got sidetracked by the power of love. Bring it back, Lori…)

Love’s been the root of everything God’s been teaching me through my own trauma, and His love is how I’ve faced the things I feared most. So I was surprised to find myself really struggling with fear the last couple of days. And fear of something that should be a mouse compared to the mountain I’ve already had fall down on my head. He’s given me such a depth of love, a love that’s battled some major giants, how is it that such a small thing has now flooded me with fear?

Love, He’s said to me, over and over. Love and compassion. His love working in and through me.

And His love has no fear.

His love is not rooted in expectation and punishment. It is not based on circumstance or response. His love sees the beauty of His creation and feels the heat of the refining fire and knows there is nothing to fear.

I don’t have to fear. What can man do to me?

His love is enough. His love is everything. His love is perfect.
