“The One” Word of the Year

The One Word of the Year LoriWatsonStories.com2014- The Year to Encourage.
2015- The Year of Growth.
2016- The Year to Get Sh#t Done.
2017- The Year of ?

Maybe it’s because 2016 became The Year to Survive rather than the productive year I’d hoped for, but 2017’s “Word for the Year” did not want to make itself known. It’s not like one needs a yearly focus word, but goals are good and a word is easier to remember than a resolution.

This year multiple words clamored for attention. I love words but none seemed quite right. They refused to merge into one or two or even three that would sum up all that’s going on inside, all that I’m challenging myself to be.

Authentic, Aware, Be, Brave, Breathe, Emerge, Forward, Intentional, Mindful, Progress, Rise, Vulnerable, Worthy. These all made the final cut, words that represent the desire to be seen and to see, to live rather than survive, to respect myself and others, to be open and move forward and rise above, to be brave.

This reminded me of Brené Brown, whom I discovered this past year. She doesn’t know it, but she helped me through my Year of Survive.

If you’re not familiar with her, this video’s a good place to start:

I opened my file of quotes (doesn’t everyone have a file of quotes?) and started reading.

“I now see how owning our story and loving ourselves through that process is the bravest thing that we will ever do.” ― Brené Brown

“Owning our story can be hard but not nearly as difficult as spending our lives running from it. Embracing our vulnerabilities is risky but not nearly as dangerous as giving up on love and belonging and joy—the experiences that make us the most vulnerable. Only when we are brave enough to explore the darkness will we discover the infinite power of our light.” ― Brené Brown

Brave equals owning our story, being vulnerable and authentic with who we are while facing who we’re not, moving our stories forward, moving forward with our stories, exploring the darkness and discovering the light. The word was there all along, waiting to be recognized for everything it is and everything it can be.

Word of the Year- Brave LoriWatsonStories.com“I want to be in the arena. I want to be brave with my life. And when we make the choice to dare greatly, we sign up to get our asses kicked. We can choose courage or we can choose comfort, but we can’t have both. Not at the same time. Vulnerability is not winning or losing; it’s having the courage to show up and be seen when we have no control over the outcome. Vulnerability is not weakness; it’s our greatest measure of courage.” ― Brené Brown

This year I choose courage. I choose vulnerability. I choose to own my stories. I choose to be brave with my life.

2017- The Year to be Brave.

Do you have a Word for the Year? If so, what made you choose that particular one? I’d love it if you’d leave a comment and share your story.

Are you still in the process of choosing? No worries, there’s a lot of year left! If it helps, here are 150 words I listed when looking for my own. (Weird thing? I wasn’t trying for a certain number and somehow ended up with 150. Kind of cool.)
